What is a Website Article?

An article is a piece of written content that provides insight into a specific topic. They are a great way to demonstrate your knowledge and expertise and place you as an expert within your industry. Additionally, they can be a great way to increase the Search Engine Optimisation of your website and make you easier to find. As such, perfecting the art of article writing is a great way to boost your marketing.

What should I write about?

Arguably, one of the most important decisions to make when it comes to writing an article is what you should write about. An article should provide useful information to a reader. If your article isn’t useful, it’s not worth reading.

Generally, it is a good idea to focus on a question or problem that your clients are facing.

Here are some questions to help choose a topic to write about:

  1. What enquiries are people making?
  2. What questions are clients asking you?
  3. What is something that people keep getting wrong or misunderstanding about the services you provide?
  4. What grinds your gears? Is there someone providing bad or wrong advice in your industry? If so, what is the correct advice to give?
  5. What have you written about in the past but could expand on?

Top Tip: If you’re not sure what people are asking about, Google your topic and look at the People Also Ask section. Try to write articles about those questions.

How should I write my article?

Keep the reader in mind – will they understand what you are writing?

Jargon and complex sentenced doesn’t impress, simple language and easy sentences do. Even if you are writing to an audience with specific knowledge (i.e., solicitors, accountants, etc.) still target your writing at the average person. As a general guide, if you gave your article to someone at the bus stop, would they understand it?

What’s in it for me?

A fundamental part of writing articles is making it clear what the reader is getting from the article. If they do not benefit, or do not think they are benefitting from the article, they are unlikely to read it in full or share it with others. Make it as explicitly clear as possible how the article benefits the reader. This information is useful because…

How much should I write?

Your article will have two main audiences, your readers and search engines (i.e., Google). You need to write enough for search engines to understand what you are writing about, so your article will show up in searches. But you also need to keep it concise enough that readers don’t lose interest halfway through. As a general guide aim for 600 words.

If you’re struggling to write enough

Make sure that you have clearly explained what you are talking about and assume that the reader knows nothing about the topic. Additionally, consider questions that a reader might have after reading your article – could you answer these in the article?

If you’ve written too much

Whilst it is important to explain things clearly, you do not need to explain something more than once. Check your article to see if you are repeating yourself and, if you are, remove the repetition. Additionally, see if there are parts of your article where you start to talk about another topic. If there are, remove the details about this further topic and make a note to write a new article about it. The articles can then be linked together at a later date.

How should I structure it?

Make good use of headings and subheadings when writing an article as this will help readers find the content that they want to look at and it will also help search engines identify what your content is about. If you are answering a specific question, make the question a heading
