Three years ago, amidst a pool of over 170 eager students, Harry Janssen was selected for a special trip to the City of Bathurst in Australia. This unique opportunity, created by the Cirencester Community Development Trust Ltd and the Cirencester Bathurst Friendship, was initially delayed due to the pandemic. Subsequently, it was further postponed as Harry sought to complete his law degree at the University of Worcester.
At 22 years old, Harry is enthusiastic as he prepares to spend an extended period in Australia until late December. He shared his excitement, stating, "I have secured an opportunity to work with the esteemed local law firm, Kenny Spring Solicitors, in Bathurst, which will contribute to my legal education and count towards qualifying as a solicitor, should I choose that career path."
In addition to his legal pursuits, Harry plans to actively engage with the local community through various events, promoting the Friendship Initiative and its commendable work. Reflecting on his entrepreneurial spirit, he added, "I also started my own marketing and business development company earlier this year and intend to continue its development while in Australia."
Since his selection in 2020, Harry has been a dedicated volunteer for the Friendship Initiative, playing a pivotal role in its development. In 2022, he organised the Cirencester Bathurst Climate Change Conference at Cirencester College, providing a platform for local secondary school students to delve into climate change research.
Harry follows in the footsteps of Alice Chandler, the first young person to visit Bathurst in 2018 as part of the Friendship Initiative. Her journey, guided by then-mayor Graeme Hanger, set the precedent for life-changing experiences.
Andrew Lennard from the Cirencester Community Development Trust Ltd, along with Simon King of the Friendship and Earl Bathurst, bid Harry farewell at Cirencester’s Golden Cross Inn. Andrew emphasized, "The idea is to provide a life-changing opportunity for a young person from the area who wouldn't typically have such a chance — whether in work, study, the arts, sports, or the voluntary sector." The initiative continues to create transformative experiences for the youth, fostering global connections and personal growth.
